hmm

I'm sure no one will read this.

Three years have passed since I last wrote anything on here, so here is some drivel to take up space on the web. Most of the past three years have been complete turmoil for me. Marriage, moving thrice, and bizarre work history are the main things. I'm now going back to school.

Just a brief blurb to get me in the writing vibe.

New Year

Its 1/1/07.

The band Death Cab for Cutie said it best:

so this is the new year
and I don't feel any different
the clanking of crystal
explosions off in the distance

so this is the new year
and I have no resolutions
for self assigned penance
for problems with easy solutions

so everybody put your best suit or dress on
let's make believe that we are wealthy for just this once
lighting firecrackers off on the front lawn
as thirty dialogues bleed into one

I wish the world was flat like the old days
then I could travel just by folding a map
no more airplanes, or speedtrains, or freeways
there'd be no distance that can hold us back.

The New Year brings promise, and that's about it. Good things could happen, so could bad. I've some things to look forward to, but speculation and "what if" isn't my bag. I don't play "what if."
The year will unfold as it will with little regard for what I anticipate.

Delicious Bass

The past few days I've been enjoying some music recreation time. I'm trying very diligently to stretch my bass guitar skills and learn a few new lines and techniques.

So in the past few days I've picked apart and learned two new bass lines from one of my favorite bands, Cake. The bass lines in "You Turn the Screws" and "Hem of You Garment" always intrigued me. They sound very complicated and intricate. They really aren't toooo tough. Its just coaxing the old, out of practice fingers to move that fast again. I've got "You Turn the Screws" about 90% down. There is one bridge that alters the chord progression a bit that I'm having diificulty picking up, but once I find where it jumps to I'm golden on that.

"Hem of Your Garment" is a bit more challenging and is only at about 60% right now. I just need to practice more to get the fingers limber and moving up to speed.

I've also been listen to heavy amounts of Victor Wooten and P-Funk and fat bass lines laid down there. I've decided I need to get some effects to get some more punch.

Bass = Good

Oh, ye of little faith.

Some of you thought it would never happen. Some of you denounced this blog as defunct and dead and deteriorated beyond repair! In many ways you were correct.

I have not blogged in a very, very long time. Why? Meh. I don't know. Didn't feel like it.

I'm attempting to revive this corpse with rituals and incantations, hoping against hope that it can come back. Even if as a shambling zombie creature, I'll be pleased.

Much has and has not changed since the last update. Still getting married in 6 months. I am no longer wasting hours of my life playing World of Warcraft. I do still read voraciously. Much of my time is now consumed with working, planning our honeymoon, sleeping, and watching movies. I'm also devising a possible screenplay for a short film based on an hilarious life experience.

So a tiny update. But its still an update.

Fie on you naysayers.

Life update...

This is for those of you who read this blog, but did not receive an email in the past week or so.

On April 25, 2006 I asked my girlfriend to marry me. She said yes. So we are engaged. We don't have a definite date, but we're looking at next May as the most probable time.

Once we get some engagement pictures taken I'll post something up here.

Huzzah!

:edit: If you didn't get an email, that doesn't mean I didn't want to tell you. It means I either don't have a current address or I'm retarded and forgot. Thank you.

I like pie.

Today I had a piece of apple pie.

It was tasty.

I liked it.

That is all.

mmmm...pie.

B movies = bad movies? I think not.

I am a connoisseur of really bad movies.

My fascination with B movies started with the series Mystery Science Theater 3000. (Which if you've never seen, then shame on you.) Sitting in the "The Cave" (the space under the stairs at CCH which I continued the tradition of furnishing and inhabiting) watching video cassettes of this show gave me the urge to find more and more terrible movies.

Horror movies, I've found, tend to be the best of the worst. The make up, creature effects, and "gore" are often stimuli for grand hilarity. Movies like The Dentist, Gingersnaps, and Re-Animator have left me laughing at their serious attempts to frighten audiences with terrible effects and even worse plot lines.

The best bad movies are the ones that realize they are bad and make fun of themselves in the process. Undead, an Aussie flick, is a prime example of a bad movie that knows its bad. In the DVD special features the filmmakers discuss the low budget and its effect on filming.

So, what is your favorite bad movie and why?
